The Principal Contractor has overall control of the construction phase of projects involving more than one contractor. This role involves the management, monitoring and coordination of health and safety during construction. Throughout the project, including the pre-construction phase, the Principal Contractor is required to liaise with the Client, Principal Designer and other duty holders.
The Principal Contractor must also:
- Prepare a Construction Phase Plan (CPP) describing how significant health and safety risks will be managed
- Ensure that welfare facilities are provided
- Provide an induction to all those working on-site
- Ensure that the site is secure
- Appoint and manage other contractors
- Monitor risks on-site
- Contribute to the health and safety file
