Decontaminate (UK) Ltd. is a fully HSE-licensed asbestos removal company operating in London, the south-east of England and the home counties. Led by Managing Director Darren Smith and Operations Director Bradley Maklin, the company provides comprehensive solutions for asbestos removal and remediation, as well as hazardous materials management. Decontaminate is known for its strong compliance culture, safe project delivery, and experience working in sensitive, high-risk and occupied environments. 

Achieving ISO Excellence 

In 2025, Decontaminate partnered with iON Consultants to support its successful certification with Alcumus ISOQAR to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001. As Decontaminate's appointed Competent Person, our team was already embedded in the business and had a detailed understanding of its operations and existing management system. This, combined with our multidisciplinary expertise and proven ability to manage complex compliance projects, led to us being awarded this certification project.  

A Collaborative Approach 

To meet Decontaminate's operational and regulatory requirements, a collaborative approach was adopted by both parties, bringing together key stakeholders and specialist expertise. This partnership combined iON’s extensive technical knowledge and hands-on guidance with Decontaminate’s responsiveness and engagement to ensure a smooth, efficient and successful accreditation process. 

 Rachel Wetherill, iON’s Principal Health and Safety Consultant, served as the lead auditor and primary point of contact throughout the project, coordinating certification activities and client engagement. Rachel conducted internal audits and facilitated the company’s Annual Management Review.  

Helen McIntyre, iON's Senior Asbestos Consultant, provided technical asbestos and sector-specific support, critical to the restructuring and refining of the integrated management systems. Helen and her colleagues also carried out site audits for asbestos removal to provide independent assurance of compliance.  

The team at Decontaminate added all compliant documentation to the company's existing library of policies and procedures, then took diligent steps to implement the new systems across the business. iON's combined audit and technical capability enabled the delivery of comprehensive quality, safety and environmental management system support in preparation for the ISOQAR audit. 

The External Certification Audit 

Decontaminate then underwent rigorous external certification audits. Stage 1, completed in October, involved a high-level review of the company's ISO management system manual and supporting documentation. Stage 2 took place over five days in December, including site visits, during which the auditors examined every aspect of the business. 

Decontaminate's operations were audited from the handling of customer enquiries and supplier procurement to the management of plant and machinery, professional development, communications, work plans, and risk assessments.  

Exceptional Results and Recognition 

The result of everyone’s hard work was certification for Decontaminate with zero non-conformances, observations, or opportunities for improvement. Becky Smith, Decontaminate's project manager, was the central coordinator for the successful execution of this project. She was responsible for ensuring that all improvements were implemented promptly and communicated effectively throughout the business. Commenting on the achievement, Becky said:
